Retaining wall contractors are often called to the scene of a collapsed retaining wall only to find the wall in question was made of concrete blocks. The reason for the collapse is always evident. By the very nature of the application, retaining walls are intended to bear loads coming from behind them where the ground they are designed to retain is.

When we study the concrete block, the design itself can tell us much about why they fail when stressed from the side. As with any hollow device, they are strongest when the load is brought to bear from top to bottom when set in their normal installation orientation. The manner in which the concrete block is most commonly used, to build walls for buildings, the majority of the load is placed on top, pushing toward the ground, where a poured concrete foundation bears the load.

A simple test of the blocks strength is possible by taking a standard framing hammer and hitting the side walls of the block. With very little effort, the walls will burst and the block is no longer of any use.

Compared to a concrete block, the segmental retaining wall block is solid and made of a high density concrete. Using the same hammer as before, you can easily wear yourself out before you bust the block. You can break off the corners and round off the edges, but it takes a chisel and sledge hammer to do any real damage.

Another problem with concrete blocks is their ability to absorb water. We are all familiar with the expansion strength of water when it freezes so we can understand that a retaining wall, one that is in constant contact with the earth behind it, would be wet most of the time. This cannot be said for the wall of a building that is protected from the rain on the outside and is open to the air on the inside.

When the temperature goes below freezing for a long enough period of time to freeze the ground, it will also freeze the water in the blocks supporting your retaining wall. Though it may take a few years, depending on the number of freezes you have each year, eventually cracks will begin to form in both the blocks and the mortar used to hold them together.

Segmental retaining wall blocks are impervious to water. They can be put in a water bath for several years and will never absorb the water any deeper than an eighth of an inch. The high density of the concrete is too tightly packed to allow water to enter the bond. Freezing will have no more effect than a hot day on these blocks.

With the wide variety of materials used for the last hundred years to create the thousands of retaining walls in all areas of the country that are not flat, it is little wonder that a retaining wall system would eventually emerge that can bear the test of time. For too long we used whatever materials were readily available with little thought of the future.

How do you pull together architectural style, landscaping, and furniture to make your porch sizzle? No matter the size of your porch, there are things you can do based upon your home's architectural style to make your home sizzle. Here are just a few common architectural styles to get you started.

Classical style architecture porches range in size from small to large. These homes have a central entrance and an equal number of windows flank each side of the door. For landscaping, use clipped hedges, brick sidewalks, and geometrical plantings in containers. Base your furniture selections around teak - a great outdoor wood.

Victorian style architecture features large, one-story porches that extend across one or two sides of the house. They may have multiple verandas with some on the second level and use elaborate details (moldings). For landscaping consider using symmetrical and colorful plantings in containers or window boxes on your steps or balustrades. Base your furniture selections on wrought iron.

Colonial style architecture porches are usually small in size with a pediment and perhaps more ornate door frames; crown molding, pilasters or columns. They feature double-hung windows or multi-pane windows in pairs on each side of front door. Landscaping should include brick pathways, large symmetrical plantings on each side of the door, and geometric beds. Make your front entrance dramatic with striking door color and a wreath. Use classic teak furniture and remember that geometric placement is the key.

Farmhouse style architecture has large wrap-around porches, tall windows, shingles or metal roofs. You'll also find dormers, gables, and simple moldings as well as the use of natural materials like cedar or stone. For landscaping use symmetrical plantings, mixed beds and borders. Incorporate simple painted garden furniture, rockers and a swing of course! Brick, flag stone and stepping-stone walkways are especially attractive.

Contemporary or modern style is not easily distinguishable due to many shapes. Porches lack ornate moldings. Wood or stone siding is usually the norm. Use asymmetrical plantings and evergreens in your landscaping scheme. Try flagstones for walkways. Stained or weathered looking furniture looks very attractive in a contemporary setting.

Choose your porch style, landscaping and furniture based upon the style of your home and you will have a great cohesive look. Try some of these ideas for your own home!

Securing Your Wooden Garden Gate

There are quite a few options for locking your gate. They range from gate latches that have a lock built in to gate latches offering a hole to slide in a padlock, to deadbolts, to slide bolts.

Lockable Gate Latches

These include a lock as either an integral part of the gate latch, or as an addition to the gate latch (such as a padlock slipped through a hole in the latch). These range from the most basic old-style gate latch that you tie a pull-string to, through highly engineered latches that have a lock as a part of the design. All lockable gate latches are lockable on one-side only (the inside of the gate, usually in the yard).

Deadbolts

Sometimes you fall in love with a particular gate latch and it isn't lockable, but you need some measure of security on the gate. A deadbolt is a really good option. Installing a deadbolt requires some tools and skill, but it looks and functions well. Generally, the deadbolt is installed in addition to a latch. You can likely find one that has the same finish as your latch.

There are two options for deadbolts: single cylinder or double cylinder. Single cylinder means that there is a knob on the inside of the gate and a keyed side on the outside of the gate. If you need to lock your garden gate from both sides, a double cylinder deadbolt is the ticket. You'll have a keyed side on both sides of the gate. If you only need the security occasionally, you can leave the deadbolt disengaged until you need it. Deadbolts are slightly technical as far as installation goes--there is some boring that's required in the internal guts of the gate and jamb.

Other Options

Another possibility for a lockable gate latch is to use the deadbolt as a latch. The benefit is that you only need one piece of hardware. The downside is that you'll need a key to open the gate from the street-side of the gate (or both sides of the gate if you choose a double cylinder deadbolt). You'll also always need to latch the deadbolt by hand, rather than having a gate latch that's self-latching.

One new option on the scene is the Emtek Keypad Deadbolt Lockset. Available in either sandcast bronze or brass, the lockset allows you to enter the gate without a key, by entering a key code of your choosing. It also has a place to use the key if you'd like. On the inside of the gate you just turn the knob and lock it up. Due to the electronics inside this deadbolt set, Emtek recommends it be used only on gates in protected areas (if exposed to a lot of seasonal rain) or in areas of low rainfall.

Slide Bolts and Barrel Bolts

Whereas deadbolts are operable from both sides of the gate, slidebolts, barrel bolts and others like them are installed on the inside (yard-side) of the gate. They are installed as an additional measure above or below a non-locking gate latch. To engage the lock, you slide the barrel into the catch and it prevents the gate from being opened from either side. These types of bolts are surface-mounted to the face of the gate.

It may sound odd but if you're struggling to get interest free credit and need to buy a sofa, you may want to consider a modular sofa.

Because of the nature of a true modular sofa system, you don't have to purchase the whole sofa in one go.

Modular sofas usually come in three components, a seat unit, an arm unit and a corner unit.

Work out your budget and how much you can afford to buy each month. You can start off with as little as a single seat unit. When you have a little more spare cash you can turn that seat unit into a 2 seater settee, the following month add another seat unit and you have a 3 seat sofa,

You may well then want to convert your 3 seat sofa into a 4 seat corner couch in which case you'll need a corner module.

If you purchase 1 unit per month, that's only 4 months and you have a large sofa that you couldn't afford to buy in one go.

Even if you only buy a unit every 2 months, you'll have your dream sofa within 8 months.

Often people take on credit from furniture stores and can end up still paying for the sofa years later by which time they may have even disposed of the sofa. Although many stores advertise interest free credit, the price of the credit is usually built into the cost of the sofa, so you're not really getting it interest free and are paying over the odds.

By going down the step by step modular route you can avoid this frustration and end up a piece of furniture that's already paid for.

There is another advantage. If you want to reconfigure you sofa at a later stage you're not stuck with the formation you purchased and can add extra units to form an even bigger sofa, or you may want to arrange your sofa in a different shape when you move house. You can convert an L shaped sofa into a U shaped couch, add another corner unit and another seat unit. You also have the option with a large modular sofa to split it at any time into two separate sofas.

If you live in a property where access is restricted by narrow doorways or narrow stairs, you'll find it much easier to get a modular sofa in, as the components are smaller than a fully assembled or partially sectional sofa.

Metal art gates are a great way to provide both security to your home as well as project an image of style and class right from the moment of entry.

When installing metal art gates there are some things the home owners need to keep in mind.

· The metal art gate design should be in keeping with the style of the house. For example, a ranch style gate at the entry to a New England style home will look out of place.

· The size and height of the gate should match the rest of the boundary wall of the property. While the height of the gate may be higher or lower than the wall, it must not look out of place.

· Metal art gates are heavy. A light gate will not provide any security. The mounting of the gates on the wall need to be strong so that the wall does not crack under the weight. The hinges must also be strong enough to resist warping under the weight and constant opening and closing.

· The best metal art gates should be of a thickness of two inches. Anything less will not only be flimsy, but give that appearance also.

· All welding must be smooth and finely ground. Make sure the manufacturer does not use fillers like bondo to fill in joints. Filler will crack over time and not only ruin the appearance of a metal art gates, but moisture will collect and promote the growth of fungus and moss which will require constant removal.

· The scroll work and designs should be of wrought iron which will add strength and durability to the gate. Cheap metal art gates often have their designs made with tubing of light aluminum alloys which will easily dent and crack.

· The gate should have an industrial powder coat finish to protect it from the elements. While this base coat, usually in black, is attractive in itself, it also forms a good base for the application of other paints and finishes.

· A full size metal art gate should have a glass pane embedded in it to allow those inside the house to see who is outside before opening the gate.

· The glass pane should be at least one and a half inches thick and of tempered glass so it cannot be broken easily.

· The glass may be etched or designed to match the rest of the metal art gate, take care that the visibility is not affected.

· While the glass pane may be bonded to the gate, another option is to mount it with strong hinges and a reliable latch so that it may be opened for the receipt of small parcels etc. without the necessity of opening the whole gate.

Small metal art gates may be used inside the house to create defined spaces. A gate could be used to separate the upstairs and the downstairs. Or one may be used at the entrance to the garden or patio.

Being one of the oldest districts in the city, Tarzana has one of the most unique interior design when it comes to their homes. This village starts as early as 1769. One of the main attractions of the town is the Otis Ranch, founded by Edgar Rice Burroughs in 1919. This is just one of the prides of Tarzana when it comes to its exquisite Tarzana homes with classic interior designs and decorations.

Tarzana homes now offer one of the best amenities that a family could have in a community. It's highly elevated, has continuous water, electricity and gas supply, and a good highway. It is on the areas in the valley of San Fernando that can offer a spacious, cool and liveable environment for your family.

Tarzan has built its own subdivisions that they usually offer for as low as $1500, and its place is as spacious as it can get with an acre of land that you can call your own. The subdivision was designed and created with an idea of a good community in mind of the engineers. It is surrounded by churches, schools and theatres. Small as it is, the town council even petitioned for their post office in 1930 and finally got it on their name: Tarzana Post Office.

Now, this small community takes pride with all the new house and buildings built with in the centre of Tarzan. Even before, Tarzan homes take a great pride in providing its community a good and accessible place to necessities. In 1930, they even had what they call "Heart of Ventura Boulevard" where a group of stores and groceries were placed. To amaze more, this boulevard was actually situated in the middle of acres of farm in Tarzana. This is a design that awes people whenever they visit this place to buy things.

However, it was in the end of the world war two when Tarzana really boomed into a commercial and industrial little town. After the war, a lot of business got establish in the area including a list of subdivisions. This made Tarzana homes bigger and more competitive when it comes to interior and designs. The small town was tagged as Los Angeles "bedroom communities". These Tarzan homes are now commonly called "home of Tarzans".

After the development of all the great amenities that this subdivision provides, Tarzana now stands a modern small town without the trace of chicken ranches and berry farms. However, the people living in Tarzan homes still continues to live on tranquillity and in homes that was built and design to create a fun and healthy environment for its residents. Currently, some of the popular buildings in the town are their new ice skating rinks, bowling centres, medical and banking buildings and country clubs.

In the modern world, Tarzan is known as the fantastic world of Edgar Rice Burroughs and among the most intricate designed building during his time is the Burroughs Tarzana Ranch. In a web site about Tarzana, a movie and picture gallery depicting Burroughs influence in the town's early years are shown. Among these are pictures and articles written by Burroughs himself and letters describing the details of Tarzana homes and its people as well as their life during the early times.

Currently, Tarzana is known for real estate business because of the exotic Tarzana home and interior designs. Most notable interior designers are in Tarzana because they knew that when it comes to looking for a house with a magnificent interior, Tarzana is one of those places. Since it just 20 miles away from Los Angeles and is just over the Hills in San Fernando Valley, the location is perfectly strategic for some who still wants to have a nightlife in the city.

The real estate business in Tarzana is mainly for single Tarzana homes for sale, these houses can usually be found in gated and non-gated communities. They are just around the corner of the schools of Los Angeles Unified School District and the UCLA. These home prices in Tarzana usually starts at $400, however, if you are looking for a more permanent house with complete amenities and exquisite interior designs, you can check the town's estate properties, the prices ranges from $700,000 to $8,000,000. These homes include all you need, spas, multiple fireplaces, swimming pools, and scenic canyon views. For more organized individuals who just want a condominium or apartment, the cost ranges from $250,000 to $450,000.

There are home owners who love the old interior design of their houses. However, there are some who also wants it to be remodelled. This is the reason is why being an interior designer is one of the big jobs in this town. A person who loves delicate interior designs comes to this pace because of this. If you want to have a remodelling job of your entire unit, all you have to do is check online. There are more than 100 offices and interior designers from Tarzan alone that you can make contact with. This only proves that people in Tarzana wants to maintain the Tarzana home effect even after year since Burroughs was gone.

Most interior designers for Tarzana homes often compete with each other by showing their intricate layout and design for any possible remodelling that needs to be done. One of the designer's offices in town even posted on their official website their own visualization and how they do their remodelling. As for other designers, posting an old and new version of a particular house is their way of attracting potential customers. For other designers, offering to do your own design with their expert touch is another way of inviting customers. Moreover, this entire interior designs centre on one thing, to provide homeowners of Tarzana the elegance and comfort of living on their own home. And most importantly, interior designers of Tarzana ensure no homes are alike when it comes to their interior designs.

However, competition in Tarzana is real tight when it comes to real estate because aside from remodelled houses and units being sold, brand new ones are also in the list making buying a harder decision to make. So if you are planning to buy a home in Tarzana, make sure to inquire with the best real estate agent in town, know your options, ask questions and don't hesitate to bargain. Remember, there are lots of homes being sold in this small town and all of them are of high quality interior design. This is a trademark that Tarzan can have for the years of its existence or until such day that it will be gone from the map.

If you are planning on adding tiles to your bathroom, it is important to follow some basic steps in order to ensure that they give your bathroom the most stylish appearance possible. Remember to consider the colour, shape, size and material of your tiles. When you have decided on this, you can transform your bathroom into the oasis of your dreams.

In terms of the material of tiles, ceramic is by far the most popular. They are strong and durable, as well as being hygienic and easy to clean. Ceramic tiles come in a wide variety of styles so there really is the right tile for every bathroom, no matter what your taste may be. Although ceramic tiles are great value, they do vary from box to box so it's important to ensure that they are all identical and each box has the same tile number.

If you want to opt for tiles that are more luxurious and truly beautiful, natural tiles made from marble, granite, slate and terrazzo are perfect although they are considerably more expensive. The other downfall of these tiles is that unlike ceramic, they can be porous and may need to be sealed to stop them absorbing water. Other materials such as glass, metal and porcelain also are extremely aesthetically pleasing. They are also more expensive that ceramic tiles and also are trickier to fit. Employing a trained professional to carry out this task if important if you have no previous experience of tiling yourself should be done to avoid any bathroom nightmares, especially if you are investing in expensive tiles. To avoid accidents, ensure that you have an anti-slip tile on your bathroom floor. This is critical if you have a family bathroom or if elderly people are using it. Travertine gives a really luxurious look to any bathroom without costing a fortune.

For a comfortable, affordable tile, opt for vinyl tiling. It comes in a wide variety of finishes to suit any bathroom, looking incredibly realistic as well as comfortable flooring. Vinyl is thick and resistant to wearing and also has a range of anti slip surfaces for added safety. Vinyl tiles provide a really hygienic flooring solution and can fit perfectly into any home.

When choosing what material you are going to invest in, don't forget to bear your overall budget in mind. Tiling can become expensive when it needs to cover a large area and if you want to purchase a natural material such as marble or granite.

History does not have to remain in history books. For instance, today a wide variety of wall vases is available in various materials, shapes, and sizes. However, ancient Greek vases have significantly influenced the wall vases of today. In fact, without the innovations that the Greeks made to pottery, perhaps today's wall vases would not exist. The Greeks improved many aspects of pottery.

BATTLE OF THE VASES

What makes Greek vases distinct among all decorated pottery? Both the methods and subjects that the ancient Greeks used on their pottery, has resulted in the very creation of the term vase painting. From the second millennium B.C. until nearly the conclusion of the first century B.C., Greek pottery, including its vases, thrived. This phenomenon happened throughout the Greek world. At first, several different local styles boomed during this period.

However, by the middle of the sixth century B.C., that situation had changed. Attica, including its capital Athens, began producing more and superior vases than its neighbor Corinth. Both areas had competed for the profitable foreign markets for vases. Attic reigned supreme for 1.5 centuries, which included much political turmoil and wars. Their ancient vases have even influenced some of today's wall vases.

However, then the Peloponnesian War ended in 404 B.C. As one result, Athens lost its lucrative markets in the Western world. Slowly yet gradually, the pottery business in Attica declined. In fact, by the middle of the fourth century B.C., the Atticans were creating no noteworthy vases. However, the art of Greek vase-painting was not dead in the Greek world.

THE BIRTH OF GREEK VASES

Ancient Greek vases evolved greatly throughout the centuries. The first Greek vases were nothing to write home about. Their shape and decorations differed little from vases that other nations produced. Human figures first appeared on pottery during the eighth century B.C. The depictures were primarily abstract, using a type of minimalism. The vase painters used lines and curves to reveal only the basic outlines of objects. This is the style that Atticans used to earn prominence in the world of ancient pottery.

The next era of Greek vase painting revealed Asia's impact on their works. Objects that influenced Greek vase painting included:

- beasts
- flowers
- monsters

RED, WHITE, AND BLACK-FIGURE

However, while the Greeks used many of the themes of Asian art, their artwork was more ornate. Instead of using rigid lines and curves, the Greeks made their vase painting more ornamental. We can see this influence on Greek vases, in some of today's wall vases. During this period, the Corinthians created the black-figure technique. They reverted to the use of silhouettes; however, there were some new developments. They added the colors red and white to the designs. Also, the artists cut lines into the vases, in order to highlight particular parts in the artwork. Within time, the black-figure method spread to Athens. Also, artists began placing their signatures on vases.

The ancient Greeks inspired many of today's wall vases. Make history by selecting lovely wall decoration vases!

Where do you keep your shoes? In a heap under the kitchen table? In a pile by the front door? Perhaps it's time you explored the fascinating world of shoe closets. That's right - a closet for your shoes. And shopping for the right one is almost as much fun as shopping for the shoes that go in them.

Unlike closet organizers, a shoe closet is more than just a bunch of boxes glued together to make a shoe cubby. I have nothing against shoe cubbies, mind you. They can be a practical, inexpensive and functional addition for closet or bedroom. But nothing beats a nice piece of furniture. I'm not talking custom cabinets, here - that can be a very expensive proposition. However, there are alternatives that can stills be attractive amenities to your home.

Shoe closets are available in a plethora of styles, types, and finishes. There's sure to be one that appeals to you and that coordinates with your existing decor.

The bench types are functional and attractively upholstered with a shoe cubby in the base. They come in a variety of cushion patterns and colors, and materials including leather. I love their versatility. Because they come in a range of widths, they can easily be incorporated at the foot of just about any bed without taking up precious wall space. They're just as functional in a walk-in closet as they are in an entryway. Some even have sock drawers located just below the bench cushion.

There are also bench styles with drawers that pivot forward, just like the freestanding types with the same style drawer. (Those come in single to triple high units in various furniture styles and finishes. Most are "assembly required", so have a handyman ready if you're not good at following directions or handling a screwdriver.)

If you can't deal with neatly placing matching pairs of shoes on a shelf that folds into the bench, perhaps a basket type unit would suit you better. Multiple baskets that slide in and out of the base under the cushion(s) seem to work well for reforming slobs and training children, (ie. husbands and kids - sometimes indistinguishable from one another.) Each one gets their own basket and all they have to do is toss in their shoes. It may take a bit longer to find a pair, and you can't be picky about the bottoms of shoes touching the tops of others, but it's better than tripping over them as you walk through the front door.

For those with extra wall space, the double door type cabinets with built-in shoe cubby are a beautiful addition to your bedroom ensemble. You can get these in single door widths, too, but obviously, those don't hold as many shoes. Both widths are available with sock drawers above the shoe cabinet. For an organization junky, this is the coup de'tat: shoes and socks in the same place!

Of the myriad of choices in shoe closets, there is sure to be one that will turn out to be the best buy you've made since those purple Prada's were on sale at Neiman Marcus. Okay, so you get your shoes at Payless - you'll still wonder how you ever got along without this awesomely practical and totally cool looking piece of furniture.
